Kurt started playing guitar in 4th grade, receiving instruction from the music teacher at his elementary school, giving him a solid basic knowledge of the axe. It wasn't until 8th grade that Kurt was recommended to his teacher and great friend, the late Dennis Monroe. From there he learned not only more about how to read music and play the guitar, but more importantly about the right mindset to have; like focusing on breathing, starting a song at a slow pace and slowly building your way up.
"Dennis was an amazing guitarist, understated, and definitely an even more amazing person - basically one of the nicest people i have ever known in my life."
Kurt and his teacher worked a lot on classical and folk songs, even occasionally playing some renaissance songs. In February 2006, Kurt and the world lost the teacher and friend, Dennis Monroe. Although Kurt still misses his teacher, Dennis lives on through Kurt in his philosiphy on life and music.
"When some one asks "what kind of music do you play?" I say "Well, I play notes."
It is with this philosiphy and classical training that Kurt has become a guitarist with a style that is shown perfectly in every note. He is able to make the guitar sing with ease, playing anything from Bach's "Invention" to the innovative Emerson, Lake & Palmer to the laid back Jack Johnson. No matter what the song, Kurt is able to make it his own.
Kurt uses a 1972 Gibson Les Paul Deluxe and a Fender Stratocaster (Mexican) which he amplifies with a Fender Twin Reverb 1972 tube amp. Acoustically, he uses 2 Taylor Big Baby acoustic guitars using a Dean Markley ProMag Grand Acoustic Pickup, which are amplified by a Behringer Ultracoustic ACX 1000 acoustic amp. Kurt's pedals include a Danelectro Fab Tone, a Slap Echo and Hash Browns.
